“Grandkids & Grannies Festival” Brings Generations Together at Rami Library
2025-06-17
On Saturday, June 14, Rami Library hosted the “Let’s Play Again: Grandkids & Grannies Festival,” helping to build bridges between generations. Organized in collaboration with the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Services, Sultangazi Municipality, Yeşilay (The Green Crescent), and Öncü Sports Club, the event brought the game culture of the past to today’s children. Throughout the festival, both young and old experienced the most joyful form of cultural heritage.
Traditional games such as table football, marbles, “bezirganbaşı,” “deve–cüce,” bottle cap flipping, string figures, and “bom” were introduced to children under the guidance of elders. Especially memorable were the moments when elders from nursing homes shared the games they cherished in their own childhoods. These intergenerational experiences created vibrant and emotional scenes, making the day both entertaining and educational.
The event featured stage performances such as the traditional shadow play of Karagöz and Hacivat, storytelling sessions by “The Storyteller Sister,” and a stand-up comedy show by Osman Doğan. The festival also included creative workshops like caricature portraits with Rüstem Yılmaz, canvas painting, and drama sessions that enhanced children's fine motor skills. Activities such as foot tennis, tug of war, and archery promoted both physical development and team spirit.
Adding to the nostalgic atmosphere, participants enjoyed treats such as cotton candy, Ottoman-style candy, and popcorn. Meanwhile, talks on healthy living and nutrition attracted great interest from families.
With this event, Rami Library once again reinforced its commitment to fostering cultural continuity and intergenerational communication. By connecting today’s children with the values of the past, the library continues to host events that go beyond books to preserve and promote collective memory.
Receiving full marks from attendees, the “Grandkids & Grannies Festival” once again showcased the inclusive nature of Rami Library, which welcomes visitors of all ages from across Turkiye.
