Rami Library has been selected as one of the finalist projects for the 2023–2025 cycle of the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture, chosen from among 369 submissions worldwide. The 19 nominated projects were announced to the public on June 5, 2025.
This important development reveals the place that Rami Library, one of Turkiye’s exemplary projects that brings together cultural heritage with contemporary life, has gained within the international architecture and design landscape.

 

ABOUT THE AGA KHAN AWARD FOR ARCHITECTURE
Established in 1977 by Aga Khan, the Aga Khan Award for Architecture evaluates architectural production in the Islamic world based on criteria such as aesthetic value, cultural sustainability, social contribution, and environmental sensitivity.
Awarded every three years, this prize considers not only the physical qualities of buildings but also their relationship with society and their impact on social life. The finalist projects are examined in detail through site visits by an international jury, and the winners are expected to be announced in the summer of 2025.

 

RAMI LIBRARY: A MEETING POINT OF HISTORY AND FUTURE
Built in the 18th century, the Rami Barracks have been faithfully restored under the leadership of the Republic of Turkiye Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and have been revived as Turkiye’s largest library.
Rami Library, a center of attraction in terms of both access to information and social life, aims to transform culture into a living and sustaining element in the public sphere.
In being selected as a finalist, the jury was influenced by criteria such as the transformation of historical heritage into a functional public space, its appeal to users of all ages, and its environmental sensitivity.

The Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkiye, Mr. Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, stated in a social media post dated June 10, 2025:
“This special project, through which we transformed the 18th-century Rami Barracks into a modern knowledge center while remaining faithful to its historical character, is not only receiving international recognition, but also represents Turkiye’s cultural vision.
To be included on this prestigious list with Rami Library, one of the most beautiful examples of the bond that architecture builds with culture and society, is a distinct source of pride for us.”
